MIAMI, FL, April 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Move over Sponge Bob! Star Trek fiction has come down to earth with a space-age self- watering system for plants that holds water like a super sponge and makes growing your favorite flowering plants or ferns easy!
Aqualok from Costa Farms, is a high-tech foam that lines the inside of hanging baskets and holds water and oxygen and releases it when needed - allowing more time to relax and enjoy life.
For quick and easy decorating, putting flowering baskets on your deck, patio or around your home adds instant style and is a great way to improve curb appeal. But you don't want to spend every weekend watering. Now with this exciting new water discovery you don't have to. Everyone can have a green thumb.
From colorful annuals to graceful Boston ferns, Aqualok in your baskets provides the perfect watering conditions so you can't over-water or under-water them! Even when plants are fully saturated, Aqualok retains air pockets so plant roots can "breathe." No more drowning them with love or neglecting them with good intentions.
A-ha moment!
The foamy substance was actually developed by a rocket scientist. Aerospace engineer, Joe Byles, invented a sponge-like substance to keep jet fuel from sloshing around in the wings of F-16 fighter jets. Upon further investigation, Byles, who has a passion for gardening, discovered that it had other useful applications.
"What's ground-breaking about Aqualok is that two-inches holds the same amount of air and water as two feet of soil and allows plants to thrive without drainage," says Byles.
Saves resources & Plants
With focus on sustainability, conserving water is critical. This new space-age technology expands the watering intervals for plants at home -- saving time, money, and water.
"Tests indicate Aqualok cuts watering frequency in half- and more for many plants!" says Jose Smith, CEO and president of Costa Farms, the largest producer of indoor plants in the U.S. "If you were watering hanging baskets every two or three days, Aqualok enables you to water only once a week. Some plant varieties will be able to go a whole month without watering!"
Byles' engineering background coupled with his passion for gardening has created a practical solution for everyone to grow beautiful plants with little fuss. Plants around the world can sigh in relief!
Aqualok will be available this spring in 10-inch annual hanging baskets at your favorite home improvement store.
